In Okinawa, there is a style of accommodation called "minpaku" (overnight stays at private residences) that allows you to experience the local lifestyle while learning about the culture and history of the area by staying at a local Okinawan home and becoming part of the family. In particular, the "minpaku" in Ogimi Village, located in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island, is a little unique.
Ogimi Village, known as the village with the longest life expectancy in Japan, faces deep green mountains and the beautiful sea. The village's rich natural environment, which has been registered as a World Natural Heritage site, and the food culture that makes the most of its natural abundance, have attracted widespread attention from overseas. The “Ogimi Marugoto Tourism Association” offers a variety of programs that allow visitors to experience the charm of Ogimi Village. We’re sure that the various encounters and experiences that you can gain from interacting with the nature, culture and the local people of Ogimi Village will become a uniquely memorable experience in your life.
The "Farmer's Homestay" is a chance to stay at a farmhouse in the rural village “Ogimi” and experience Okinawan country life. By becoming a part of the family, working on the farm together, and learning about the local life and culture through cooking and eating, you gain an insight into the rooted Okinawan custom "Yuimaaru" (an Okinawan custom of caring and helping each other out). There are two types of packages; the first being a one or two nights stay and the other being a one day experience without an overnight stay.
There is also a wide range of "optional experiences" to experience the traditional culture and nature of Ogimi Village. Among the most popular programs are those that allow you to "yuntaku" (Okinawan language for "chat") with the energetic old men and women of Ogimi Village, and enjoy the brave eisa dance performances of the local youth. There are also attractive nature experiences such as canoeing, trekking and snorkeling to fully enjoy the beautiful mountains and sea. For more details, please refer to the brochure.
