【7D4N self-driving around Perth and West Australia at RM2,200】
After 17 years of not visiting the land of slow pace living: Perth, West Australia, we finally had a longed family trip of a total 8 adults and 1 child.
Total spending above does not include round ticket from KL to Perth:
The ticket I bought this time is mostly redeemed through Enrich point. The original price for an adult and a child ticket was about RM1,539, but with points deduction from Enrich I ended up only paying for RM395 of airport tax, saving me a lot of money! So next time if you're taking a flight, consider signing up for their usually free membership, they might have point collecting system and also many other member's privileges!
Day 1 (Perth):
After 6 hours of flight, we had landed the beautiful land of Perth. Perth's October is right in the spring season, so it is pretty cool and cozy, with the average temperature around 15-22 degree, very suitable for going outside.
We contacted Aries Car Rental immediately after landing, and they sent someone to pick us up. After 10 minutes of car ride we stopped at their office for document signing and etc., then we're ready for our road trip! We have 9 person in our group, so we rented a 12-seater. We highly recommend to apply for a car insurance if you plan to self-drive in Australia, because everywhere you go you have a high chance to running into a kangaroo. If you can, try not to drive after 6pm, where the kangaroos are more active 😮
Car rental🚕: Aries Car Rental: https://www.ariescarrental.com.au Malaysian Chinese-operated car rental service, most of the staffs are Malaysians so you don't have to worry about language barrier.
The first thing after we get our car is to drive down to Woolworths to get our ingredients for dinner in Airbnb before 5pm. Australians do not really enjoy night life and would prefer staying at home to rest, so most shops and restaurants in Australia usually close at around 5pm. Woolworths is really an exciting supermarket, selling almost everything you want, including souvenirs and gifts, and with many different discounts and promotions too!
After our grocery shopping we checked into our Airbnb, had our dinner then rest for the day. By the way, the speed limit of the road outside our Airbnb is 20km/h. 😴
Day 2 (Perth):
Attraction 1: After our breakfast we went to the weekend-only Freementle Market. There's a lot to see and buy in this market, like honey, fruits and vegies, local delicacies, crafted knick-knacks, etc. For a small market you might accidentally walked for 2-3 hours because of the amount of things to see!
Attraction 2: Next we headed to Round House, famous for beautiful sea view. But because it was very windy, all our photos have hair-covered faces 😂 Afterwards we went to the famous Kailis' located at a nearby pier to have their Fish & Chips. The restaurant is filled with tourists all coming for their delicious foods. While the seafood was really good, but they're also a bit pricy.
Some other attractions around the city include: Blue House, Bell Tower, London Court, Crown Casino, etc.
Most tourists will definitely bring back some supplements in their trip to Australia because of their comparatively cheaper price. So we went to Chemist Warehouse to shop for supplements, with some even at half-price discount!
Then we again get to Woolworths before 5pm for snacks, wine, and dinner, then we went for picnic at the beautiful King's Park. Unlike Malaysia, it is fairly common to see families having a picnic outside, I mean it is a healthy family bonding activity.
Day 3 (Albany):
We hit the road to Albany the first thing in the morning. With the total distance of about 400km it took us about 5 hours to reach the quiet southern town of Albany, with beautiful scenery along the road to feast our eyes.
Attraction 1: The Gap & Natural Bridge. Highly recommended! Best sea view in Australia, every shot you take is guarantee to look professional!
Attraction 2: Cable Beach. Nearby spot of the above attraction. The sand is really fine at this beach, you can't really hold it for long without getting blown away by the wind.
Attraction 3: Albany Wind Farm. The sun is slowly setting already when we arrived at this place, making the scenery extra nice! The windmills all spin really slowly, as if they're slowly mesmerizing you and stopping the time flow. We circled the entire mountain area, and every corner is brimmed with attractive scenery!
Then we quickly went back to the city area to look for a restaurant for dinner, but too bad most of them are closed. But we did managed to have our dinner at Istanbul Kebab, then checked into another Airbnb. Lesson learnt, never have your dinner late in Australia.
Day 4 (Margaret River):
Another long trip ahead. We first head to Denmark Bakery about 45 minutes away from our home stay for delicious and filling breakfast. This bakery deserves all it's prizes and awards, all their foods are incredibly d-lish!
Attraction 1: Greens Pool Beach. This is the place you'll see a bunch of foreigners swimming and suntanning under cold weather, so healthy and strong! The sea is crystal clear as well, I bet the beach will be filled with tourists in summer.
Attraction 2: Valley of Giant Tree Top Walk, entrance fee AUD21 (Adult). A must for forest and nature lovers. The highlight is definitely the 45-minute-long canopy walk, but those with acrophobia better think twice before crossing the bridge!
Then we had lunch at a nearby eatery before continuing another 3 hours journey to Margaret River, and checked into a highly recommended Margaret Beach Resort. Fair price, large and clean rooms, and right next to a beach, definitely check it out!
And all houses in this resort comes with laundry washer and dryer, and also dishwasher, super convenient!
Day 5 (Margaret River):
Had our breakfast with a sea view at the nearby White Elephant Beach Cafe, feeling #blessed~ How good would it be if I can have breakfast with this beautiful view everyday of the rest of my life! While the toast are really nice, but the coffee seems too little, but regardless it's still good. And if you're willing to pick up trash by the beach, the cafe will offer you a free coffee too ☕️
Attraction 1: Sunflower Animal Farm, entrance fee AUD13.5. Aside from some common animals, some interesting ones include kangaroo, llama/alpaca, guinea pig, etc. Super cute!!!
Attraction 2: Margaret Watershed Premium Winery. A very fashionable winery that attracts a lot of tourists for wine tasting. For AUD2 you get to enjoy 3 small cup of wines, and AUD2 discounts for all wine purchased. Personally I don't like the taste of Australian wine because of their dryness and sourness.
We have our lunch at Margaret River Town. There are many restaurants here, but we decided to eat at Settlers Tavern. They serve delicious yet affordable foods, so highly recommended!
Attraction 3: Injudup Natural Spa. A super pretty place, but you have to pass through several rocky mountains to reach this natural spa. To put it simple, this place is technically a spa formed by rocks surrounding a small area of the sea. But the waves crashing on the rock are really stunning! Plus during sunset the sun will shine on the sea, if it's not for the chilly weather we would have take a dip for a more heavenly experience.
Attraction 4: Surfers Point. A place for magnificent sunset. So we rushed to get here before 6.30pm. The place is already filled with people and their cameras ready for the sunset.
Day 6 (Bunburry):
We finally can wake up as late as we want this day! Then we head to Busselton Jetty, 50 minutes car ride away.
Attraction 1: Busselton Jetty. Too bad it was raining when we arrived, so we have to end our visit at this place short. If you want to walk to the pier the fee is AUD4, and the distance is about 1.8km. You can also take their train, but it's about AUD20.
Then we drove for another 45 minutes to Bunburry, the second largest city in West Australia. Here we finally saw a lot more crowds and cars.
Attraction 2: Farmer's Market. You can get a lot of fresh vegetables, fruits, and meats here. The freshness of the ingredients are mouth-watering, and some are even not commonly seen in Malaysia. Chefs would definitely fall in love with this place!
There's not much attraction to see here in Bunburry, so we have our lunch at Mojo's Restaurant, a nice western restaurant with equally nice foods. We originally bought a cake to celebrate my mom's birthday there, but they said we'll have to pay an extra AUD15 for the celebration, so we canceled it because we think it's not worth it. After our lunch we head to Woolworths again for the last stretch of shopping! (This is the 5th time we went to Woolworths 😱)
Must-buy snacks: Pods, Tim Tams, Kangaroo Potato Chips, Red Rock Dell chips, papaya cream, Gippsland Diary yogurt (super nice!), etc. The milks are also really delicious, only AUD2.5 for 3 liter. We bought it almost daily for our breakfast.
We decided to have our dinner at the beach side Blackbeach Cafe & Restaurant. Beautiful scenery, large, fresh, and delicious meals, very nice!
Day 7 (Perth):
The journey from Bunbury to Perth is about 2 hours of car ride. Because our flight back to KL is in the afternoon, we visited the famous Blue House while we still have some time. The iconic blue house is technically the landmark of this place, and we head to the airport immediately after taking photo. The car rental agency will send us back to the airport when we return our car, very convenient.
And that concludes our 7D6N Perth journey!
Total Spending:
Mercedes Sprinter 12-seater rental (Car insurance/Baby car seat inclusive) - RM444 per pax
6 nights accommodation - RM740 per pax
Petrol - RM90 per pax (total journey approx. 1,200km)
Meals - RM800 per pax
Entrance fee - RM103.50 per pax
Grand total = RM2,177.50 per pax
For leisure, nature, camping, and self-travel lovers out there, Perth is definitely a great place for you. Of course there's a lot of other places and attractions we didn't visit due to time constraint. If you're interested to have a in-depth tour of the entire Perth it will probably take about 10-12 days, at least it won't be as rushed as ours, and you get to really enjoy every scenery along your journey!
