Yonaguni ponies are a rare native horse breed from Yonaguni Island, Japan’s westernmost island.
Smaller than thoroughbreds, Yonaguni ponies have a calm, gentle nature and can be ridden by children over six years old (please enquire for children aged five and under).
You can meet these ponies and experience horseback riding at Umikaze Horse Farm in Nanjo City on the main island of Okinawa. An instructor will walk alongside the horse whilst guiding you, so even if you are a beginner, there is no need to worry!
There are several horseback riding courses including some that take you for a walk along the sandy beach and others where you can visit some of the scenic spots in Nanjo. Depending on the course, it may take up to two to three hours to complete the walk so those courses are recommended for those who want to enjoy riding for a longer period of time.
