Since 1492 (for 450 years), Okinawa was an independent country called the Ryukyu Kingdom. Through exchanges with Japan, China, and neighboring countries in this period, Okinawa developed a unique cuisine, a mixture of different food cultures. During the Ryukyu dynasty, Ryukyu court cuisine was created to entertain Chinese and Japanese officials. It’s said the most sumptuous and elegant dishes were served at Shurijo Castle and the State Guesthouse for entertaining guests and special ceremonies. One of the best places to enjoy such traditional Ryukyu court cuisine is “Akatafu” in Shuri, Naha city.

The owner-chef, Mr. Ken Shiroma, is a leading expert in Ryukyu court cuisine. Shiroma is a highly skilled chef who has devoted himself to Ryukyu court cooking for more than 40 years, and around 30 years have passed since Shiroma opened Akatafu near Shurijo Castle. He keeps to tradition and continues to convey the excellence of Ryukyu court cuisine with his experience and fine technique.

At Akatafu, you can enjoy fine court cuisine prepared with meticulous care and attention to detail at reasonable prices. There are three options: a seven-course, a ten-course and a twelve-course menu, all of which must be booked in advance. The refined dishes are delicately prepared, and each one evokes a deep, powerful emotion. Experience "true" Okinawan food culture that will satiate your body and soul. The restaurant is 7 to 8 minutes walk from Yui Rail Shuri Station. So why not stop by while strolling the streets of Shuri?
